Welcome to your Full Scottish, live from our Cowcaddens studio in Glasgow.
Full Scottish programme starts at 12:00 on Sunday 10th February 2019
This week, the Full Scottish is presented by Anne McLaughlin, with guests, James Dornan MSP and Glasgow city Councillor, Annette Christie.
As time is running out on the disaster that is Brexit, the tories seem intent on driving the UK at full steam into the buffers without a deal. The inability (or perhaps DUP driven unwillingness) to comprehend Ireland’s concerns has left the UK unable to find much room for any renegotiation, with the other 27 EU nations standing firmly behind Ireland and the EU’s position. Donald Tusk came under fire from Brexiteers and the tory press for wondering if there might be a special place in hell for Brexiteers who didn’t have a plan. He found more sympathy for his remarks in Scotland.
Glasgow City Council has signed off on its equal pay deal meaning women will get backdated pay. This ongoing situation, inherited from the previous Labour administration in Glasgow has finally been sorted, financed by the Council is re-mortgaging some of its most iconic buildings.
Plans have been submitted to demolish Glasgow’s ABC. While the news was hardly unexpected, following the fire that engulfed it and the Glasgow School of Art, it is still sad news for the live music scene in Glasgow. Generations remember it for being a cinema or the music venue it was latterly. Could a new music venue rise like a phoenix from the ashes?
Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon has been in the USA and Canada this week, to promote trade and cultural links. Both the diplomacy and trade will be very important as we stare down the barrel of the Brexit gun.
There was another Union getting in a state this week, as Donald Trump delivered his second State of the Union address to the sarcastic applause of Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Join us for all this and more.
In 2013 Annette Christie was a single parent of a teenage daughter, working in Marketing, living in Tollcross Glasgow with zero interest in politics. Her daughter Toniann was 10 at the time (now 15) and persuaded her mum to take her along to help with the Yes campaign for the 2014 Independence referendum. It didn’t take long for Annette to become one of the most active Yes campaigners for Yes Provan. She joined the SNP and is now a Glasgow Councillor and Bailie. Annette has lived in Toronto, Montego Bay (Jamaica) & London and is a graduate of the then Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama.
James Dornan lives in the Glasgow Cathcart Constituency he has stayed in most of his life. He joined Glasgow City Council in May 2007 as the elected Member representing the SNP in the new Langside Ward. He was elected as the Leader of the Opposition in Glasgow City Council in 2008. In the 2011 Holyrood Elections, James was elected as MSP for Glasgow Cathcart and was re-elected in the 2016 elections. James is determined to see an end to sectarianism in Scotland and tirelessly campaigns against one of the worst issues in Scotland in the 21st century.
