This week on the Full Scottish, Maggie Lennon is joined by Professor Aileen McHarg, Professor of Public Law and Human Rights, University of Durham and by regular Scotland@7 presenter, Kenny McBride to discuss the big stories in the news.
The Supreme Court, this week, heard the appeals by the petitioners against the decisions in the courts in England and Northern Ireland in favour of the UK Government and the UK Government’s appeal against the decision of the Inner House of the Court of Session in Edinburgh which found against the UK Government in the Cherry Case. Their decision is expected at the beginning of the coming week and its findings will be a damning indictment of the state of the UK’s unwritten constitution whichever way it goes.
With the tories in a shambles over Brexit, Labour puts a shot into the back of net, but it turns out to be their own goal posts. Labour seem to be incapable of determining a policy on Brexit which the whole party and their supporters can get behind. At a time when they should be ahead in the polls, they are still polling well behind the tories. And now it seems they are preparing for a change in leadership with rumours of Corbyn resigning.
There are solutions to climate change, but there are those saying that demonstrations will not make a difference. While that may be literally true, these demonstration will come to be seen as the catalyst which finally saw governments taking the action which will solve the Climate Change Emergency and for this, Greta Thunberg’s place in history is assured.
Can we get by a week without a sectarian organisation marching up to the top of the hill and down again. The day’s when religious bigotry was used to divide and rule in Scotland are over and marching past places of worship to emphasise your sectarian hatred are past and it is now time to finally end this grotesque display.
“Stands Scotland where it did?” Is Scotland now a country ready to know itself and stand up and represent itself on the world stage? Discuss. Discuss it with your friends, your colleagues and with anyone you meet. Discuss it positively, respectfully and above all discuss the case for Scotland being the best country it can be.
