Welcome to the Full Scottish from our Cowcaddens Studio in Glasgow.
Full Scottish starts at 12:00 midday on Sunday 10th May 2020
Kenny McBride is joined by Alison Thewliss MP and iScot Magazine publisher, Ken McDonald to discuss the big stories in the news on this week’s Full Scottish.
Friday was the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, which the media turned into a full on display of bunting, Vera Lynn and jingoism, with the Daily Mail offering a commemorative coin to celebrate “Britain’s Victory Over Europe.” Thankfully, Broadcasting Scotland was able to offer an antidote. Funnily enough, that same UK media did not give nearly so much attention to Europe Day on Saturday.
An Opinium poll for the Observer has found that more people think UK government has handled coronavirus worse than Spain and Italy, in contrast to public attitude surveys in Scotland which found that 76% thought that the Scottish Government was doing a good/very good job in handling of coronavirus compared to only 52% who thought the UK Government was doing a good/very good job.
Six weeks into Lockdown and the UK Government is only now talking about people coming into the UK from abroad having to go into quarantine for 14 days. It makes you wonder what difference it would have made to the number of COVID-19 cases if the UK borders had been closed before the virus took hold?
It’s not the leaving of Lockdown that grieves us, but the risk of vulnerable people dying if we ease the lockdown too early. The TUC warns people should not be going back to work unless and until workplaces are safe for people to return.
As Downing Street’s new “Control the Virus” message gets lampooned on social media, we await what changes Boris Johnston will propose this evening and how Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish Government and the other devolved administrations will respond to his proposals.
As usual, on the Full Scottish, you can expect intelligent discussion and in-depth analysis by guests who are pre-eminent in their fields.
